Ask a Candidate

[August 15, 2024]

What questions do you have for the candidates running for City Council? Send them to the Hillsdale News and we will put them to each of the candidates running to represent our district.

As of this writing, 23 candidates are up for election for the three city council seats in the newly created District 4, which includes Hillsdale as well as the rest of the westside and a portion of southeast. Not only do Hillsdale voters face the daunting task of navigating a new ranked choice voting system to select three among the 23 candidates, we also face the challenge of having our voices heard among the other 24 neighborhoods in District 4.

In an effort to make the Hillsdale voice heard in the upcoming city council election and in our new form of city government, Hillsdale News is putting together a list of community-generated questions to put to each of the District 4 candidates, responses to which will be published here. We hope the answers will inform your voting choices as well as inform our future representatives on the concerns and priorities of Hillsdale residents.

Among the questions submitted to the Hillsdale News so far:

  • Will you advocate to increase the police force and enforce laws against street crime and drug use?

  • What is your position on the idea that Portland taxes on businesses are too high and are making Portland "unfriendly" to businesses?

  • How will you introduce more accountability and metrics to evaluate the success of city initiatives?

  • How can the city and county can work together more effectively?

  • What will you do to foster the new 12-member council’s ability to work well together?

  • Is compromise a primary value in public policy making? Why or why not?

  • What distinguishes you from other candidates and why do you deserve my vote more than others?

  • How would you put Portland on a sustainable financial footing?

  • How will you increase Portland’s housing supply?

  • What do you see as Portland’s transportation priorities?

  • How will you support Portland’s central city building owners and businesses?

  • How will you engage with your constituency in Hillsdale?

There's no deadline to get your questions in, but the sooner you do the more likely they will be included.
